In the early 1980s, this shirt was released as a piece of merchandise to capitalize on the success of both the 1979 album Unknown Pleasures and the 1980 single Love Will Tear Us Apart.

The front graphic is the iconic album art from Unknown Pleasures, which is a plot of the radio waves from the pulsar CP 1919. The back graphic features the famous song title "LOVE WILL TEAR US APART" and a photograph from a series of images of two angels, taken by Bernard Pierre Wolff in the late 1970s.
